MLB 49 43 Remarkable postseason pitching 21281182 Kings of the hill Kings+of+the+hill MLB

Playoffs bring out the best in some pitchers. We’ll bestow no laurel wreaths upon those who have too small of a sample size (sorry, Roy Halladay and Don Larsen), those who have benefited from run support rather than personal excellence (sorry, Andy Pettitte), and those whose postseason value is tied up in a single legendary outing (sorry, Jack Morris). What we're left with is astonishing postseason accomplishments.

MLB 49 43 Remarkable postseason pitching 21269020 Mariano Rivera, Yankees Mariano+Rivera%2C+Yankees MLB

Mo exhausts the superlatives. His postseason ERA of 0.70 over 141 innings, represents a stand-alone miracle. He hasn’t been tagged with a playoff loss since Bryce Harper was 8 years old. He’s pitched in 32 postseason series, and in only one (the 2000 World Series against the Mets) has he given up more than one earned run.

MLB 49 43 Remarkable postseason pitching 21257409 Sandy Koufax, Dodgers Sandy+Koufax%2C+Dodgers MLB

Koufax’s resume: Eight World Series games, 0.95 ERA, two shutouts in three days during the '65 Fall Classic (!), three rings. Yes, he played in the run-suppressing 1960s; and, yes, Dodger Stadium helped even more. But “The Left Arm of God” delivered by any standard during the playoffs.

MLB 49 43 Remarkable postseason pitching 21266122 Christy Mathewson, Giants Christy+Mathewson%2C+Giants MLB

Mathewson, of course, didn’t have the luxury of padding his numbers with Division and League Championship Series. So his postseason credentials were earned on the widest of wide stages. And his credentials? A postseason ERA of 0.97, 10 complete games in 11 starts, and three shutouts in the 1905 World Series.

MLB 49 43 Remarkable postseason pitching 21274000 Bob Gibson, Cardinals Bob+Gibson%2C+Cardinals MLB

Gibby is most often remembered for whiffing 17 in Game 1 of the '68 World Series, but he also turned in six gems in nine total World Series starts. Gibson’s career postseason ERA stands at 1.89, and he has the same number of World Series shutouts (two) as he does World Series home runs (two). Summary: He could pitch, he could hit.

MLB 49 43 Remarkable postseason pitching 21269021 Curt Schilling, Phillies/Diamondbacks/Red Sox Curt+Schilling%2C+Phillies%2FDiamondbacks%2FRed+Sox MLB

Bloody sock, four pennants, two rings, 11 postseason wins, 2.23 playoff ERA. Schilling has much to his credit, including a legendary run in the 2001 playoffs. Many of us will remember him for that aforementioned bloody sock and his place in Red Sox lore. But even without his days in Boston, Curtis Montague might still find himself on this list.

MLB 49 43 Remarkable postseason pitching 21269018 John Smoltz, Braves/Cardinals John+Smoltz%2C+Braves%2FCardinals MLB

Smoltz has 209.0 (!) playoff frames to his credit. He’s also — in his (extensive) time on the job — pitched in 25 series, thrived as both a starter and reliever, recorded a career postseason ERA of 2.67 and been at his best in eight World Series starts.

MLB 49 43 Remarkable postseason pitching 21272010 Orel Hershiser, Dodgers/Indians/Mets Orel+Hershiser%2C+Dodgers%2FIndians%2FMets MLB

Hershiser of course has to his credit the 1988 World Series MVP. As well, he’s in the top 10 all-time for postseason starts, and his postseason ERA of 2.59 remains impressive. His start in Game 2 of the '88 Series remains a neglected classic.

MLB 49 43 Remarkable postseason pitching 30233036 Cliff Lee, Phillies/Rangers Cliff+Lee%2C+Phillies%2FRangers MLB

Lee's overall postseason resume: a 2.52 ERA and 89 whiffs in 82.0 playoff innings to date.

MLB 49 43 Remarkable postseason pitching 21269019 Dave Stewart, Dodgers/A’s/Blue Jays Dave+Stewart%2C+Dodgers%2FA%26rsquo%3Bs%2FBlue+Jays MLB

Stewart was famous for his toughness and resolve on the mound, and he was also famous for his postseason prowess. He pitched in 11 postseason series, and in nine of them he more than did his job.

MLB 49 43 Remarkable postseason pitching 21272009 Josh Beckett, Marlins/Red Sox Josh+Beckett%2C+Marlins%2FRed+Sox MLB

Beckett’s regular-season career is mostly known for squandered promise and inconsistency. In the postseason, however, he’s lived up to the press clippings. His overall playoff ERA of 3.07 (compared to a career regular-season ERA of 3.96) is impressive enough, but it’s Beckett’s 1.16 World Series ERA that cinches his spot on this list.
