MLB 49 43 Best moments of 2010 World Series 21614341 Ahh, good times Ahh%2C+good+times MLB

The 2010 World Series — and the 2010 season — is in the books. But before we wander into the gaping, baseball-less void that is the winter, let’s look back upon what was a pretty darn entertaining series. The five-game set gave us many moments to choose from, but these are Dayn Perry's best of the best ...

It’s always the best moment of the series. Fittingly, this one ended with Brian Wilson striking out an opposing hitter. For the first time in 56 years, the Giants had won the belt and the title. The victory scrum ensued, and the champagne was soon flowing. The celebration, much like the champs themselves, had character. In a related matter, Wilson then justified his reputation as the best interview in sports. — Dayn Perry

Renteria (middle) was already having a great series when he stepped into the box against Cliff Lee in the seventh inning. The beleaguered shortstop then hit a determinative three-run homer that in essence decided the series. If that was the last at-bat of his very good career, then it was one hell of a way to go out. Renteria earned every ounce of his World Series MVP trophy.

There wasn’t really one single moment that defined Bumgarner’s night, but his performance as a whole needs to be highlighted. He had some help from the stellar San Fran defense, and Aubrey Huff and Buster Posey both went deep. But Bumgarner, who didn’t allow a runner to reach scoring position until the eighth, tamed the Texas lineup in hitter-friendly Arlington. In the process, the 21-year-old Bumgarner became the youngest pitcher to start a World Series game since Fernando Valenzuela in 1981. As well, he and Posey formed the first rookie World Series battery since Spec Shea and Yogi Berra in 1947.

Sure, it doesn’t have the numerical resonance of, say, 715 or 61, but in Game 1, the Giants’ second baseman set a World Series record by notching three doubles in his first three plate appearances. Sanchez’s third double broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth and began a six-run frame that buried Cliff Lee and the Rangers.

There weren’t many highlights for the Rangers in this series, but Moreland’s home run stands out. In the bottom of the second, Moreland blasted a three-run bomb to deep right field off of Jonathan Sanchez. It turned out to be the winning hit in Texas’ only victory in the series. So rousing was Moreland’s shot that even Nolan Ryan changed his expression.

Lincecum (pictured) and, as Brian Wilson put it, his “championship hair” were dominant in the final game of the series. No runner reached second base until Nelson Cruz homered in the seventh. After the Cruz blast, Lincecum walked Ian Kinsler to bring the tying run to the plate. Then Lincecum, who would strike out 10 on the night and earn his second win of the series, fooled David Murphy with a 2-2 slider and did the same to Bengie Molina. That ended the threat and the Rangers’ hopes.

The Giants’ other ace crafted a pure gem. With the score a still perilous 1-0 in the sixth, Cain, with one out, gave up back-to-back singles and then uncorked a wild pitch. Then, however, Cain induced harmless pop-ups from Nelson Cruz and Ian Kinsler. Cain escaped and eventually earned the win with 7 2/3 scoreless innings.

For a little while, there was hope. In Game 5, Cruz provided that hope by touching Tim Lincecum for a home run. Lincecum settled down and then handed it over to Brian Wilson for the win. However, Cruz’s bomb brought the Ballpark to life for one last time in 2010.

Game 2 turned out to be a blowout win for San Fran, but the game was still close and up for grabs in the fifth when Kinsler blasted what looked like a home run off the bat. Instead, the ball bounced off the top of the center field wall and fell back into the field of play. Kinsler settled for a double and missed by a single inch what could’ve been a game-changing spank.

Young Liam Roybal, who rocked the Ron Washington look so well he entered the realm of the Internet Sensation, announced “Play Ball!” before Game 4. The Rangers lost the game and the series, but no one can take away the role they played in inspiring the greatest Halloween costume in the history of Halloween costumes.
