News: Nieuwenhuis may have the inside track to break camp as one of the Mets' two backup outfielders, Newsday reports.
Impact: Nieuwenhuis will battle Eric Campbell, Matt den Dekker and Cesar Puello to come north with the parent club when the regular season opens. Nieuwenhuis has the most experience, shown he can come off the bench as a solid pinch-hitter, and had an .855 OPS against righties last season, against whom Juan Lagares (elbow) struggles at times. In addition, and possibly more important, Nieuwenhuis is out of options, so he would have to pass through waivers to get sent back to Triple-A.
