News: Smoak will compete for at-bats at DH this season, MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm reports.
Impact: The Blue Jays will deploy Edwin Encarnacion as the everyday first baseman, meaning Smoak will compete with Danny Valencia and Dioner Navarro for at-bats at DH. Despite this announcement, Smoak will probably also get the odd start at first, just because it is an option to help give Encarnacion occasional half days. However, simply put, if Smoak hits, he will play somewhere. That said, there is a mounting track record that suggests he won't hit much, so fantasy owners in most formats can take a wait and see approach with Smoak.

News: Smoak is expected to platoon at first base with Danny Valencia if Edwin Encarnacion is shifted into the regular DH role, the Blue Jays' official site reports.
Impact: A fresh start for Smoak may help him get back on track after he seemingly took a step forward in 2013 with the Mariners (.238/.334/.412, 20 HR). Smoak is not guaranteed a role with his new club, but he's a former first-round pick with an opportunity to move into one of the more hitter-friendly parks in the American League after spending the last four seasons trying to navigate the expansive confines of Safeco Field. For his career, Smoak has posted an OPS against righties that is nearly 60 points higher (.709) than his mark against lefties (.650), which could make the Jays' decision to platoon with him Valencia a viable one.
