News: Chavez and the A's avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.15 million contract Monday, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.
Impact: Chavez finished last season as a reliever, but he opened the campaign as a starter, and will have an opportunity to do so again in 2015 with Jarrod Parker (elbow) and A.J. Griffin (ankle) unlikely to be ready for Opening Day. Chavez posted a 3.44 ERA and struck out 119 batters in 125.2 innings over 21 starts for the A's last season.

News: Chavez and the Oakland Athletics have agreed to a $2.15 million, one-year contract that avoided salary arbitration.
Impact: Chavez stepped in as a key member of the rotation in 2014 when projected starters Jarrod Parker and A.J. Griffin were each lost for the year to elbow injuries that required surgery. Chavez, 31, went 8-8 with a 3.45 ERA with 21 starts and 32 appearances for a career-high 146 innings last year, when he made $775,000. The wins were his most in parts of seven major league seasons with Oakland, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Atlanta and Toronto.
