News: Hughes allowed five earned runs on six hits Tuesday, retiring just one Baltimore batter, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: "Some of those ground balls were hit hard," Hughes said in defense of his infielders. "It was a tough day, but I've had tougher." Because Hughes and John Holdzkom -- two pitchers who helped Pittsburgh in 2014 -- have options remaining, one of them could start the season in Triple-A. The Pirates are taking a close look at two flame-throwing options, Arquimedes Caminero and Radhames Liz, both of whom have no options remaining.

News: Hughes surrendered three runs in an inning Friday against the Twins.
Impact: Hughes figures to once again serve as a sixth-or seventh-inning hurler capable of pitching multiple innings. He went 7-5 with 13 holds in 2014, but blew both of his save opportunities.

News: Hughes agreed to a one-year contract worth $1.075 million with Pittsburgh, avoiding arbitration, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: A 1.96 ERA in 64.1 innings last year belied his 3.99 FIP. Pittsburgh seems content to use Hughes as a middle-inning reliever, limiting his fantasy usefulness. The 29-year-old finished 2014 with seven relief wins, 13 holds, and two blown saves.
