News: Herrmann started at first base in Wednesday's split-squad loss to Boston. He went 0-for-3 but is hitting .368 (7-for-19) this spring.
Impact: Herrmann is competing against Eric Fryer and Josmil Pinto for the backup catcher role, but he could also make the roster as a third catcher with his versatility to play the outfield. He's trying to add first base as well this spring to give him more flexibility.

News: Herrmann will compete with Eric Fryer and Josmil Pinto for the backup catcher role this spring, manager Paul Molitor told MLB.com.
Impact: Hermmann is likely a long shot. Pinto would appear to have the lead as by far the best hitter of the three and Fryer could win as the best defender. Herrmann offers versatility since he can play the outfield. He had a bounceback season at Triple-A by hitting .304 with a .878 OPS, but has never been able to hit in the majors (.520 career OPS).
