News: Gomes was outrighted to Triple-A Durham on Wednesday.
Impact: The 31-year-old made 62 appearances for Tampa Bay last season, posting a 1.19 WHIP and a swinging-strike rate over 11 percent, but it was not enough to maintain his spot at last week's Rule 5 roster deadline. Gomes could still attend spring training as a non-roster invitee, but he figures to have to bide his time at Durham to start the year.

News: Gomes was designated for assignment on Friday, the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin reports.
Impact: The Rays needed to clear space on the 40-man roster, so Gomes may not have much of a future with the big league club in Tampa Bay. Look for the veteran reliever to continue to bounce back and forth between the minors and majors, pitching primarily in low-leverage situations.

News: Gomes allowed one hit over a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday against the Yankees en route to his first save of the season.
Impact: Brad Boxberger had pitched on back-to-back days and three of the last four days prior to Tuesday's game, so he was likely unavailable. Boxberger has been pretty bad down the stretch, posting a 4.79 ERA over the second half, so it would not be surprising if the Rays opted for a closer-by-committee approach over the final weeks of the season, meaning Gomes could be called upon again.
