News: Wainwright (Achilles) will begin playing catch from 120 feet this week, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Impact: Wainwright, who had previously been throwing from 90 feet, will take another incremental step forward as he continues to recover from April surgery to repair his Achilles tendon. If the right-hander's current timetable holds, he should be on track to resume mound work in early September, potentially putting him on tap for a late-season return. Because Wainwright would require more extensive time to build up his arm back to the point where he could throw 100-pitch starts, the Cardinals seem more likely to bring him back in a relief role once he's healthy. Though he hasn't pitched out of the bullpen in quite some time, it's not unfamiliar territory for the 33-year-old, who first made his mark with the Cardinals as the closer on their 2006 World Series squad.

News: Wainwright (Achilles) no longer requires the use of crutches and he believes there's a realistic chance he will pitch yet this season in September or October, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Impact: Wainwright was believed to be out for the season when he suffered a torn Achilles tendon in late April. There's a good chance the Cardinals will make the playoffs and if they do it sounds like Wainwright might be able to help. It's highly unlikely he provides any meaningful innings for fantasy owners this season, though.
