ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals will be without yet another left-handed reliever in 2017 who contributed to the club's efforts this past season.
Dean Kiekhefer was claimed on waivers Friday by the Seattle Mariners after the Cardinals removed him from the 40-man roster earlier this week. The Mariners first announced the news on their official Twitter account.
Kiekhefer made his major league debut in May and went on to pitch in 26 games for the Cardinals this season. Over 22 innings, Kiekhefer posted a 5.32 ERA while striking out 14 and walking seven batters. His numbers were much more favorable against left-handed hitters, who hit just .209 against him.
The Cardinals already announced last month that lefty Zach Duke had Tommy John surgery and will miss the 2017 season, so the remaining left-handers on the 40-man roster who are expected to be available for next season include Tim Cooney, Jaime Garcia, Marco Gonzales and Kevin Siegrist.
