ST. LOUIS — The Memphis-to-St. Louis shuttle stayed busy Friday morning when the Cardinals called up rookie left-hander Kevin Siegrist and sent down rookie right-hander Maikel Cleto.
The club needed bullpen reinforcement after Joe Kelly threw 80 pitches and Cleto 59 in Wednesday’s 10-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Manager Mike Matheny said afterward that Kelly, who allowed one earned run in 5 2/3 innings, likely will be given three days’ rest.
Cleto, just called up, was charged for five earned runs in 2 1/3 innings in what amounted to a one-day stay in the majors.
Siegrist, a 23-year-old out of South Florida, was the Cardinals’ 41st-round pick in the 2008 draft. He was named the organization’s minor league pitcher of the month for May. He has a 2-1 record, 1.95 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings for Springfield and Memphis.
The 6-5 lefty is the eighth player to make his debut on the big league roster this season.
