Cardinals place Westbrook on 15-day disabled list

ST. LOUIS — The much-applauded starting pitching rotation of the St. Louis Cardinals will undergo an immediate change.

The Cardinals announced Sunday that right-handed pitcher Jake Westbrook will be placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 9, due to right elbow inflammation.

Left-handed pitcher John Gast will be purchased from Memphis (AAA) on Tuesday. Gast, who is 3-1 with a 1.16 ERA over six starts in Memphis will start against the New York Mets.

Westbrook was 2-1 with a 1.62 ERA over seven starts for the Cardinals. He led the National League in ERA after the month of April.

Gast, a sixth-round draft pick out of Florida State in 2010, began this season in Memphis with a 32 consecutive scoreless inning streak.
