Cardinals' Motte to undergo Tommy John surgery
MAY 03, 2013 6:28p ET
Cardinals GM John Mozeliak told reporters before Friday night's game in Milwaukee that he was told by the team doctors that Motte had trouble during his scheduled throwing session earlier in the day. Motte was trying to avoid surgery but the elbow had other ideas.
"Obviously we were hopeful and thought maybe he could rehab through this," Mozeliak said. "But after throwing today, he just realized it wasn't going to get any better."
If Motte needs support for the journey back to recovery, he should look no further than teammate Adam Wainwright, who is the most recent Cardinals pitcher to go through the Tommy John process. Wainwright missed all of the 2011 season and was back on the mound roughly 13 months after having surgery.
Mozeliak said surgery is scheduled for sometime next week.
