ST. LOUIS -- Right-hander
Michael Wacha has been recalled from Double-A Springfield, just in time to start the
Cardinals' game Tuesday night at Cincinnati.
Wacha was among six players the Cardinals added to their roster. Also in that group were pitchers Tyler Lyons and Carlos Martinez (from Springfield), first baseman/outfielder Brock Peterson (from Triple-A Memphis), infielder Ryan Jackson (Memphis) and catcher Audry Perez (Memphis).
Wacha returns the rotation after spending his most recent major league stint in the bullpen, including four innings August 28 against the Reds. He had seven strikeouts in that game. Wacha, 22, was 5-3 with a 2.65 ERA in 15 starts at Memphis this season and is 2-0 with a 3.78 ERA in 10 games (four starts) for St. Louis. He faces Cincinnati's Homer Bailey in his start tonight.
Lyons is 2-4 with a 4.73 ERA in nine games (eight starts) in the majors this season. The rookie left-hander was 7-2 with a 3.32 ERA for Memphis in 17 games (16 starts).
Martinez was a combined 6-3 with a 2.49 ERA in 16 starts between Springfield and Memphis this season. He has gone 1-1 in 12 games (one start) for the Cardinals.
Peterson, 29, enjoyed a strong season at Memphis, where he was a Pacific Coast League All-Star and led the league with 25 home runs and a .531 slugging percentage. He also batted .296 with 84 RBIs (fourth in the league) and a .895 OPS (second). He batted .154 with two RBIs in 11 games with the Cardinals earlier this season.
Jackson appeared in two games for the Cardinals earlier this season after playing in 13 games as a rookie in 2012. He displayed a slick glove at Memphis this year, committing just nine errors in 406 total chances and finishing second among PCL shortstops with a .978 fielding percentage. He also ranked third on the team in both hits (123) and games played (121) while batting .278.
Perez becomes the 20th rookie to appear on the Cardinals' roster this season. He batted .210 with six home runs and 33 RBIs in 82 combined games with Springfield and Memphis.
