KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- As expected, the Royals placed recently-acquired Jayson Nix on the 25-man roster Saturday and optioned infielder Christian Colon to Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Nix, 32, was claimed on waivers Thursday and arrived here Saturday. He can play shortstop, second base and third base.

Colon was scheduled to start for Northwest Arkansas on Saturday night. Manager Ned Yost said the plan is for Colon to play in the final three games of Northwest Arkansas' season.

Colon then is expected to return to the Royals on Tuesday after the September rosters expand. Colon will return with right-handers Aaron Crow and Liam Hendriks, both of whom also were optioned earlier to Northwest Arkansas.

According to Yost, Nix was acquired primarily as infield depth. Nix also serves as insurance if Omar Infante's troubling shoulder inflammation gets worse.

Infante, after testing his shoulder before Saturday's game, indicated it was good enough to start, though Yost estimated Infante only will be playing at "80 percent."

"It's never going to subside really this season," Yost said. "You just hope he can play through it."
