Zimmer-to-Omaha is among 19 Royals roster moves

Pitcher Kyle Zimmer will open the 2016 season with Triple A Omaha.

Top pitching prospect Kyle Zimmer was sent to Triple A Omaha on Monday. His was among 19 roster moves made by the Kansas City Royals.

The club optioned pitchers Zimmer and Miguel Almonte, outfielders Brett Eibner and Jose Martinez, and infielder Cheslor Cuthbert to Omaha. In addition, pitchers Alec Mills and Matt Strahm, infielder Ramon Torres and outfielders Jorge Bonifacio and Bubba Starling were sent to Double A Northwest Arkansas.

The Royals reassigned nine players to minor league camp: pitchers Christian Binford, Jonathan Dziedzic, Aroni Nina, Brooks Pounders and Sam Selman; infielders Hunter Dozier and Balbino Fuenmayor, and catchers Zane Evans and Cam Gallagher.

The Royals now have 44 active players remaining in major league spring training, not including left-handed pitcher Jason Vargas, who is on the 60-day disabled list. Of those 44 players remaining in camp, 14 are non-roster invitees.
