Michal Brezina of the Czech Republic led the field after the men's short program at Skate America on Friday night.

Brezina successfully completed a triple flip-triple toeloop combination as part of a clean program, unlike several of the other men who fell or scaled down their required combinations. He decided to leave out a quad just before taking the ice.

Brezina totaled 79.08 points to lead after the short for the first time in a Grand Prix competition.

World silver medalist Takahiko Kozuka of Japan was second at 70.69. He fell on his opening quad toeloop, then touched down on his triple axel before tossing in another combination to make up points.

Daisuke Murakami of Japan, the only other man to complete a quad Friday, was third at 70.67.
