Detroit chosen as host for Skate America

Skate America is going back to Detroit.

Fifty-two skaters from the around the world will compete in men's, women's, pairs and ice dance Oct. 18-20 at Joe Louis Arena. It's the fourth time Skate America has been in Detroit, but the first since 1998.

The list of competitors will be announced June 1.

Points earned at Skate America and the other five Grand Prixs determine who qualifies for the Grand Prix Final, skating's most prestigious event after the Olympics and world championships. The other Grand Prixs are: Skate Canada; Cup of China; NHK Trophy (Japan); Trophee Eric Bompard (France); and Rostelecom Cup (Russia). The Grand Prix Final will be Dec. 5-8 in Fukuoka, Japan.
