Pedroia finds way to winner’s circle

A 4-year-old chestnut filly named Pedroia won the third race at Suffolk Downs in the Boston suburbs on Wednesday, capturing the victory by a margin 9-3/4 lengths under the guidance of jockey Hector Ramos.

The horse, trained by Arthur Duffy, Jr., is named after Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, but he has no affiliation with it.

Perhaps it’s no surprise that the New England crowd made Pedroia a heavy favorite in the field of eight. She ran one mile and 70 yards in 1 minute, 47.60 seconds, returning $3.40 for a $2 win bet.

It was also a good day for Ramos, who rode three winners, albeit those with less interesting names.

It might be a little confusing for Red Sox fans to refer to Pedroia as "her."
