Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux, in his first ride in the Oklahoma Derby, rode Politicallycorrect to victory, closing with a wide run down the stretch Sunday to beat favorite Willy Beamin by three-quarters of a length.
Politicallycorrect was the widest of the six horses lined up side by side at the top of the stretch, and Desormeaux said he tried to keep the horse from straying outside before he realized that was only slowing him down. He let loose and rode to victory in the $400,000 race for 3-year-olds at Remington Park.
Politicallycorrect went away at 10-1 odds and scored his third career win in a field that included Kentucky Derby entries Prospective, who finished fifth, and Daddy Nose Best, who was sixth.
The winning time was 1 minute, 50.23 seconds for 1-1/8 miles on a fast track. Politicallycorrect returned $22.20 on a $2 win bet..
