Del Mar, CA (Sports Network) - General Challenge, the winner of the Santa

Anita Derby and the Pacific Classic was retired earlier this week after three

average performances this year.

After a 2 1/2 year absence, General Challenge raced three times and finished

a total of 59 lengths off the lead.

The seven-year-old gelding closes an excellent career with nine wins from 21

starts for over $2.8 million. His other major victories included the Strub

Stakes and the Santa Anita Handicap as a four-year-old.

The horse, owned and bred by John and Betty Mabee and trained by Bob

Baffert, was injured in the 2000 Pacific Classic and did not race again

until April of this year.
