People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has called for an investigation into whether jockey Gabriel Saez knew Eight Belles was hurt before the race was over.
While most were still celebrating Big Brown's victory, some track personnel try to hold down Eight Belles, who was trying to get back up despite breaking both ankles. The filly was euthanized moments later.
After finding out Eight Belles had broken both front ankles, track officials had little choice but to euthanize the filly.
