Wie to tee it up at Sony Open

Honolulu, HI (Sports Network) - Michelle Wie, the young golf phenom, has accepted an invitation to play in the PGA Tour's Sony Open in Hawaii in January. The office of Governor Linda Lingle confirmed the news on Thursday.

Wie, who failed in two previous attempts to qualify for the tournament, will become the youngest woman to play in a PGA Tour event.

Wie competed in nine professional events in 2003, including the Boise Open on the Nationwide Tour and the Bay Mills Open on the Canadian Tour. She played in seven events on the LPGA Tour, including a tie for ninth at the season's first major, the Kraft Nabisco Championship, where she played in Sunday's last group with Annika Sorenstam and eventual winner Patricia Meunier-Lebouc.

The Sony Open in Hawaii is the first full-field event on the 2004 schedule for the PGA Tour. defeated Aaron Baddeley in a playoff last year for his second win in as many weeks.
