Charleston, SC (Sports Network) - Fourth-seeded defeated Spaniard on Sunday to capture the championship at the $1.3 million Family Circle Cup. Williams ousted the 16th-seeded Martinez 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 to claim her first title in 14 months. She earned $189,000 for the win.

The American won her first tournament since defeating in the final at Antwerp, Belgium in February 2003.

Williams became only the 13th player in the Open Era to win at least 30 career singles titles. She tied Tracy Austin for 11th place on the career list.

The former world No. 1 Williams made the Wimbledon final last July before losing to her sister Serena. However, that tournament proved to be the last of the year for both sisters, as Venus strained an abdominal muscle and Serena injured her left knee and eventually underwent surgery.

Serena entered the Family Circle Cup this week, but was forced to pull out prior to her third-round match against Martinez because of soreness in her knee.

Martinez, who won here in 1994 and 1995, was appearing in her first final in four years and was looking for her 33rd career singles title.

Earlier in the week, the veteran Martinez became only the seventh player in the Open Era to collect 700 match wins, which she accomplished with a victory over Chinese qualifier Tian Tian Sun on Monday.
