Kasey Kahne's quest to sweep the 2005 Busch Series races at Texas Motor Speedway was put to rest on Saturday after a strong performance ended in misfortune on lap 164.
Kahne started from the 6th position in Saturday's O'Reilly Challenge and quickly raced his way into the top-three battling Ryan Newman and Greg Biffle for the top spot. On lap 17, after the caution flag was waved for a spin in turn four, Kahne informed his crew that his car was loose in the center and off. The next lap Kahne hit pit road taking four tires, fuel and a track bar adjustment. Quick work by the Hungry Drivers crew gained Kahne one position allowing him to restart from the 2nd spot.
The next seven laps of the event saw two caution periods but after the restart on lap 32, Kahne was able to get a good feel of the car's handling and reported to his crew that the Hellmann's Dodge was "really good and really fast." After putting about 30 laps on his tires, Kahne reported that the car's handling was tight when running in the bottom groove. Crew chief, Trip Bruce, encouraged him to run the high line where he was running the faster lap times.
Upon reaching their pit window on lap 88, Kahne pitted under green for four tires, fuel and wedge and track bar adjustments. Kahne quickly regained his position among the top-three and within ten laps let his crew know that the car was tight off the corners. When the caution was displayed on lap 104, Bruce made a last second call to bring Kahne down pit road for four tires and fuel and another track bar adjustment. Another quick pit stop put Kahne in the second position for the restart on lap 109. On lap 131 Kahne reached the bumper of the No. 39 Dodge piloted by Newman and over the next six laps, the two exchanged the lead four times in a heated battle that resulted in Kahne taking the lead on lap 136.
Kahne held the top-spot for the next 30 laps during which he and Bruce discussed pit strategy for the final stage of the race. Unfortunately luck would not be with the Hungry Drivers¿ team this weekend. Just a few laps shy of their scheduled pit stop, Kahne's right front tire blew and sent him into the wall on lap 165. Damage to the Hellmann's Dodge was severe and determined irreparable by the Hungry Drivers crew. Kevin Harvick went on to take the checkered flag.
The NASCAR Busch Series will return to action on Saturday, November 12, 2005 at Phoenix International Raceway. Erin Crocker will be behind the wheel of the No. 6 Ragu Dodge.
