Mauresmo, Myskina win Filderstadt openers

Germany (Sports Network) - Last week's Moscow finalists, Frenchwoman and red-hot Russian , posted opening-round victories Wednesday at the $650,000 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. The fifth-seeded Mauresmo erased American 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, while the eighth-seeded Myskina snuck past an injured 0-6, 6-1, 4-0, as the American retired in the third set due to lower back pain.

Myskina is fresh off her back-to-back titles in Leipzig, Germany and Moscow. She upset Mauresmo in last week's title match at the Kremlin Cup to become the first-ever Russian woman to title in Moscow, and two weeks ago she ousted world No. 1 in the semifinals and world No. 2 - Hardenne in the final to capture the Sparkassen Cup.

Mauresmo will meet lefthanded Swiss in the second round, while Myskina will encounter compatriot on the indoor hardcourt at TennisSporthalle Filderstadt.

Day 3's other seeded winners in Filderstadt were No. 6 Russian and No. 7 American . Dementieva leveled fellow Russian 6-3, 6-3, while Rubin overcame Russian 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Dementieva has won two of her last three tournaments, with a pair of championship match victories coming at the expense of Rubin in Bali and Shanghai. Dementieva's second-round opponent here will be Italian Elia, while Rubin will take on Bulgarian .

In other first-round action, Japan's shut down Israeli Anna Pistolesi 6-2, 6-1 and Schnyder clipped fellow Swiss 7-5, 7-5. Sugiyama is rewarded with a second-round match against third-seeded American .

The top-seeded and defending Filderstadt champion Clijsters will open defense of her title with a second-round match against Slovakian on Thursday. The bout will mark a rematch of last year's final here, won by Clijsters in three sets. Clijsters is expected to play, despite nursing an ankle injury for the past two weeks.
