Williams spent his first two years of college football at Towson. He transferred to Maryland in 2001 and took a redshirt that season per NCAA rules. Williams started 14 games the following year and was selected Second Team All-ACC and Third Team All-American. He finished fourth on the team in tackles (82), while also intercepting four passes. As a senior, Williams was on the watch list for the Thorpe and Nagurski Awards. He is a physical, tough player who can be a force in the running game with his hard hits. He has good closing speed in coverage, but lacks great ball skills. With his current abilities and his work ethic, Williams is one of the better safeties in the draft.
