Daytona Beach, FL (Sports Network) - Nancy Lopez has been chosen as the captain for the 2005 U.S. Solheim Cup Team, the LPGA announced Monday. Lopez, an LPGA and World Golf Hall of Fame member, was unanimously selected by a five-member committee formed by the LPGA Board of Directors to captain the American squad at the ninth edition of The Solheim Cup to be contested from September 9-11, 2005 at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana.

"When The Solheim Cup returns to the United States in 2005, there could be no better ambassador of the talent, heart and enthusiasm of the event," said LPGA Tour Commissioner Ty Votaw. "I know her experience as a Solheim Cup competitor and LPGA champion will make her a respected leader, while her emotional connection to the fans and players will make her an inspired one."

The committee, which was made up of Votaw, president of the LPGA Executive Committee Donna Andrews, chairman of the LPGA Board of Directors Marguerite W. Sallee, and the past two U.S. Solheim Cup captains Patty Sheehan and Pat Bradley, used several guidelines including previous Solheim Cup experience and LPGA Tour career successes.

"When Commissioner Votaw called me and told me I was going to be captain, I was very honored," said Lopez. "To represent the U.S. Team as captain is very important to me, and I'm excited to be able to represent my country again."

Lopez began her legendary career in 1978 when she became the only rookie to win Rookie of the Year, Player of the Year and earn Vare Trophy honors in the same season. All in all she has collected 48 titles throughout her career and was inducted into the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame on July 20, 1987.

Lopez will lead a U.S. Team, which has never lost the Solheim Cup on home soil, with the task of regaining the title from the Europeans.
