Commack, NY (Sports Network) - Second-seeded Brazilian lost a straight-set match Friday to No. 7 Younes El Aynaoui in the quarterfinals of $380,000 TD Waterhouse Cup -- a final hardcourt U.S. Open tune-up. Top-seeded and defending champion of Thailand, on the other hand, was an easy quarterfinal winner earlier in the day.

The Morrocan El Aynaoui earned a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win to vault himself into the semifinals. He was playing less than 24 hours after his wife gave birth to their third son in Paris.

"They (my family) definitely gave me some added energy tonight and I can’t wait to see my new baby boy," said El Aynaoui. "They are waiting for me back in Paris. I would like to have been there but tennis is my job, so I have to be here."

El Aynaoui banged out 16 aces and will now face American in Saturday's semifinal round. It is El Aynaoui's first trip to the semifinals in 14 tournaments. The last time was in April when he reached the final round in Casablanca before falling to .

Srichaphan handled American qualifier Jeff Morrison 6-4, 6-3 to set-up a Saturday semifinal against German , who is 2-0 lifetime against the talented Asian star.

The world No. 11 Srichaphan defeated Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela in last year's Commack final, but a potential 2003 semifinal matchup here was spoiled by Kiefer, who dismissed an ailing Chela 6-1, 3-0 on Friday. Chela quit in the second set while suffering with a stomach virus at The Hamlet Golf & Country Club.

Srichaphan may be is winless in his career against Kiefer, but the two haven't met since 1999, a year in which Kiefer was a top-10 performer and Srichaphan finished at No. 106 in the world.

In Friday's other match, Blake squeezed out a hard-fought victory over . Blake was able to overcome the Finland's Nieminen in 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 fashion and make his first semifinal appearance since San Jose in February

The 2003 TD Waterhouse titlist will claim $52,000.
