Date: Aug. 6, 2006
Event: Allstate 400 at the Brickyard (Round 21 of 36)
Series: NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series
Location: Indianapolis Motor Speedway (2.5-mile oval)
Winner: Jimmie Johnson of Hendrick Motorsports
JGR Finish: Tony Stewart (eighth - running, completed 160 of 160 laps); Denny Hamlin (10th - running, completed 160 of 160 laps); J.J. Yeley (34th - running, completed 160 of 160 laps)

Tony Stewart led the three-car Joe Gibbs Racing contingent by finishing eighth in Sunday's Allstate 400 at the Brickyard NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Stewart, driver of the No. 20 Home Depot Chevrolet and winner of last year's Allstate 400, overcame his 32nd place starting spot to post his 11th top-10 finish of the season Denny Hamlin, driver of the No. 11 FedEx Express Chevrolet, finished 10th in the same car he used to sweep the two Nextel Cup races at Pocono (Pa.). It was his ninth top-10 finish of the year and his third straight. J.J. Yeley, driver of the No. 18 Imitrex® (sumatriptan succinate) Chevrolet, finished a disappointing 34th after holding steady in either the 10th or 11th spot for much of the day. Yeley's potential top-10 effort disappeared when an incident with Kasey Kahne on the last restart sent Yeley sideways into the wall. Yeley finished the race on the lead lap, but with little downforce on the rear of his Imitrex® (sumatriptan succinate) Chevrolet, it was incredibly loose, with Yeley having to nurse it to its undeserved finish. Hamlin continues to lead the trio of JGR drivers in the championship point standings, gaining one spot to climb to seventh, 64 points behind sixth-place Mark Martin and 476 points arrears series leader Jimmie Johnson. Stewart remains with Hamlin amidst the top-10, as he too picked up a position to rise to ninth in points, eight points behind eighth-place Jeff Gordon and 505 markers behind Johnson. Yeley held steady at 26th, but sits just 38 points outside the top-25. Johnson scored his 22nd career Nextel Cup victory and his fourth of the season by winning the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. Matt Kenseth finished second, while Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer and Mark Martin secured the rest of the top-five. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kyle Busch, Stewart, Carl Edwards and Hamlin comprised the remainder of the top-10. The next event on the Nextel Cup schedule is the Aug. 13 AMD at The Glen road course race at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International. The race begins at 1:35 p.m. EDT with live coverage provided by NBC.
