JGR Race Report — Sharpie 500

Motor Speedway (.533-mile oval) Winner: Matt Kenseth of Roush Racing JGR Finish: Denny Hamlin (Sixth Â¿ Running, completed 500 of 500 laps); Tony Stewart (22nd Â¿ Running, completed 498 of 500 laps); J.J. Yeley (31st Â¿ Running, completed 492 of 500 laps) Denny Hamlin, driver of the No. 11 FedEx Freight Chevrolet, led the three-car Joe Gibbs Racing contingent at Bristol Motor Speedway by finishing sixth in Saturday night's Sharpie 500 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race. It was Hamlin's fifth consecutive top-10 finish and his 12th this year. Tony Stewart, driver of the No. 20 Home Depot Chevrolet, finished 22nd, two laps down, while J.J. Yeley, driver of the No. 18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet, finished 31st, eight laps down. Yeley's hard-luck year continued when his car was hit by Elliott Sadler after Sadler crashed on Lap 381 in Turns 3 and 4. Hamlin now leads the trio of JGR drivers in the championship point standings. Hamlin gained two spots to sixth in the championship point standings, 429 markers arrears series leader Jimmie Johnson. Stewart dropped three spots to eighth, 443 points behind Johnson. Yeley stayed in 28th place. Matt Kenseth scored his 14th career Nextel Cup victory and his fourth of the season by winning the Sharpie 500. Kyle Busch finished second, while Dale Earnhardt Jr., Scott Riggs and Jeff Gordon secured the rest of the top-five. Hamlin, Carl Edwards, Ryan Newman, Jeff Burton and Jimmie Johnson comprised the remainder of the top-10. The next event on the Nextel Cup schedule is the Sept. 3 California 500 at California Speedway in Fontana. The race begins at 8:05 p.m. EDT with live coverage provided by NBC HD.
