Date: July 7, 2006
Event: USG Sheetrock 400 Qualifying
Series: NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series
Location: Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill. (1.5-mile oval)
Pole Winner: Jeff Burton of Richard Childress Racing
JGR Lineup: Denny Hamlin (7th), J.J. Yeley (10th), Tony Stewart (34th) Denny Hamlin, driver of the No. 11 FedEx Kinko's Chevrolet, qualified seventh for Sunday's USG Sheetrock 400 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill., to lead the three-car contingent of Joe Gibbs Racing. Hamlin turned a lap of 30.021 seconds at a speed of 179.874 mph on the 1.5-mile oval. "We definitely thought we had a shot at the pole," said Hamlin. "We just bottomed out way, way too bad and skated up the race track. I'm kind of frustrated, but we're going to have a top-10 effort so I'm pretty proud about that." Hamlin's Joe Gibbs Racing teammates - J.J. Yeley in the No. 18 VESIcare® (solifenacin succinate) Chevrolet and Tony Stewart in the No. 20 Home Depot Chevrolet - qualified 10th and 34th, respectively. Yeley turned a lap of 30.114 seconds at 179.319 mph while Stewart timed in at 30.520 seconds with a speed of 176.933 mph. "It was a really good lap for the VESIcare Chevrolet," said Yeley. "Got into (turn) one really good and got an excellent corner going and got free coming off of turn two. It definitely robbed us of three tenths. I know we didn't have a pole lap going. I would've had to put down a phenomenal lap. Obviously, we can't be disappointed with a top-10 start. It's still an excellent lap, and we're looking forward to a great race." "I just messed up on my lap," said Stewart. "The car was better than I was. Chalk this one up to driver error. It just gives us more incentive to do well on Sunday." Jeff Burton captured his fourth career pole position and his second of the season with a time of 29.728 seconds at a speed of 181.647 mph. Rounding out the top-five in qualifying were Brian Vickers (29.782 seconds at 181.318 mph), Kasey Kahne (29.886 seconds at 180.687 mph), Kevin Harvick (29.930 seconds at 180.421 mph) and Jimmie Johnson (29.935 seconds at 180.391 mph). Fifty drivers attempted to qualify for the 267-lap race. Those not making the cut in the 43-car field were Paul Menard, Kevin Lepage, Chad Blount, Brent Sherman, Mike Garvey, Derrike Cope and Carl Long. As far as manufacturers went, Chevrolet swept the front row thanks to the marks set by Burton and Vickers. Dodge was next best at the hands of Kahne. Carrying the flag for Ford was sixth-quick Matt Kenseth (30.047 seconds at 179.718 seconds). The USG Sheetrock 400 gets underway on Sun., July 9 at 3:35 p.m. EDT. TNT will carry live coverage of the event.
