Tony Stewart, driver of the No. 20 Home Depot Chevrolet, qualified fifth for Saturday night's Sharpie 500 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway to lead the three-car contingent of Joe Gibbs Racing. Stewart turned a lap of 15.437 seconds, 124.299 mph on the .533-mile oval.
Stewart's Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Â¿ Denny Hamlin in the No. 11 FedEx Freight Chevrolet and J.J. Yeley in the No. 18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet Â¿ qualified sixth and 25th, respectively. Hamlin turned a lap of 15.446, 124.226, while Yeley timed in at 15.555, 123.356.
Kurt Busch captured his seventh career pole position and his fourth of the season with a time of 15.362, 124.906. Rounding out the top-five in qualifying were Jeff Burton (15.374, 124.808), Bobby Labonte (15.414 124.484), Matt Kenseth (15.424, 124.404) and Stewart.
Forty-seven drivers attempted to qualify for the 500-lap race. Those not making the cut in the 43-car field were Chad Chaffin, Hermie Sadler, Mike Wallace and Mike Skinner. Morgan Shepard and Stanton Barrett withdrew from the event before qualifying.
As far as manufacturers went, Dodge took the top spot thanks to Busch's pole-winning mark while Chevrolet was next best at the hands of Burton. Carrying the flag for Ford was Kenseth.
The Sharpie 500 gets underway on Sat., Aug. 26 at 7:40 p.m. EDT. TNT will carry live coverage of the event.
