BROOKLYN, Mich.

Tony Stewart, driver of the #20 Home Depot Chevrolet, qualified 36th for Sunday's GFS Marketplace 400 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway.

"The lap was alright," said Stewart, who toured the 2-mile oval in 38.383 seconds with an average speed of 187.583 mph. "It was just a little bit free on entry, but that's the way you want it when you're in qualifying trim. I'm pretty excited and I think it's going to be good for tomorrow."

Stewart's Joe Gibbs Racing teammates - Bobby Labonte and Terry Labonte - qualified 18th and 20th, respectively. Bobby clocked a time of 38.090 seconds with an average speed of 189.026 mph, while older brother Terry timed in at 338.132 seconds with an average speed of 188.818 mph.

Joe Nemechek captured his ninth career pole position and his first of the season with a time of 37.582 seconds at an average speed of 191.581 mph. Rounding out the top-five in qualifying were Jeff Gordon (37.627 seconds at 191.352 mph), Kasey Kahne (37.645 seconds at 191.260 mph), Kyle Busch (37.687 seconds at 191.047 mph) and Ryan Newman (37.692 seconds at 191.022 mph).

Forty-eight drivers attempted to qualify for the 200-lap race. Those not making the cut in the 43-car field were P.J. Jones, Carl Long, Eric McClure, Bryan Reffner and Morgan Shepherd.

As far as manufacturers went, Chevrolet swept the front row with the laps made by Nemechek and Gordon, while Dodge was next best at the hands of Kahne. Carrying the flag for Ford was eighth-quick Elliott Sadler (37.837 seconds at 190.290 mph).

The GFS Marketplace 400 gets underway on Sun., Aug. 21 at 2:10 p.m. EDT. TNT will carry live coverage of the event.
