The former British Open champion and No. 1 player in the world said he aggravated the back problem last week at The International. He missed 10 weeks in the 2000 campaign with back pain but came back the next year by winning the British Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes.
The 2003 season has been a disaster for Duval. He is 197th on the money list and has made the cut three times in 17 stroke-play starts. Duval has broken 70 only three times this year.
While Duval withdrew thanks to the back injury, Aaron Baddeley had problems of his own Friday. He arrived 40 seconds late for his tee time and was assessed a two-stroke penalty. Baddeley opened the PGA Championship with a one-under-par 69 but is seven-over par through 14 holes in his second round and has dropped to plus-six for the tournament.
