Clement cruises; Beast, Gonzo fall in Marseille quarters

Marseille, France (Sports Network) - Seventh-seeded French crowd favorite eased into the semifinals, but fourth-seeded Belarusian and fifth-seeded Chilean went by way of the upset Friday at the $746,286 Open 13 tennis event. Clement, the 1999 runner-up here, blew away Spaniard 6-3, 6-2 on the indoor surface at the Sports Palace. His opponent on Saturday will be promising 19-year-old Swede Robin Soderling, who ousted Gonzalez 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. "Gonzo" titled in Vina del Mar in his native Chile two weeks ago.

The 26-year-old Clement is the only seed still standing in a draw that featured such stars as French Open champ Juan Carlos Ferrero, last week's Buenos Aires winner and Australian Open runner-up .

Mirnyi, nicknamed the "Beast," gave way to red-hot Slovakian 6-3, 7-6 (12-10), as Hrbaty improved to a sizzling 15-2 this season, including a pair of Aussie Open tune-up titles last month.

Hrbaty will meet the -Marc Rosset winner in the other semifinal.
