Sluman and Mediate were two shots off the lead after round one at Rhode Island Country Club and bolted out of the gate with three consecutive birdies starting at the par-four second. The duo added back-to-back birdies from the sixth and an eagle at the par-five eighth to go out in 29. Sluman and Mediate were on fire on the inward half as well with four straight birdies starting at the 10th. They reached 20-under with a birdie at the 15th and kept things going with a birdie at the 17th. At the par-four 18th, Sluman ran home a 15-foot putt for a closing birdie to secure the title. The CVS Charity Classic features 10 two-member teams competing in a 36-hole, best-ball format with a total purse of $1.2 million. The event was first played in 1999 and has since raised close to $.25 million for charity.
