Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored both goals as Sweden beat the Faeroe Islands 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

The Sweden captain opened the scoring in the 35th minute after the Faeroes' defense failed to clear Mikael Lustig's cross. The hosts dominated possession but lacked finishing, squandering several chances before Ibrahimovic converted a penalty in the 82nd minute.

The goal came two minutes after Sweden was reduced to 10 men, with Andreas Granqvist being sent off for retaliating against Frodi Benjaminsson.

The win means Sweden moves up to third place in Group C, level on 11 points with second-place Austria and five behind leader Germany after six games.

Denmark's hopes of reaching the 2014 World Cup finals are all but over after it slumped to a dismal 4-0 home defeat by Armenia in a qualifier on Tuesday.

Armenia striker Yura Movsisyan opened the scoring within 30 seconds of the kickoff after Denmark's Simon Kjaer accidentally passed the ball to him. Aras Ozbiliz made it 2-0 in the 19th minute, sending his shot past goalkeeper Stephan Andersen after a mistake by an increasingly error-prone Denmark defense.

Movsisyan added a third in the 59th minute, prompting fans to start leaving the Parken stadium, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored in the 81st minute.

Denmark lies fifth in the six-team Group B with six points from as many games. Group leader Italy has 12 points, Bulgaria 10, Czech Republic nine and Armenia six.
