MIAMI GARDENS, FLA.

Juan Pablo Carrizo saved from Mauricio Isla and then struck home the decisive penalty to hand Inter Milan a 9-8 victory on penalties after a 1-1 draw with Juventus in the first match of an International Champions Cup doubleheader at Sun Life Stadium.

The backup goalkeeper provided a late dash of drama to the Derby d'Italia stalemate. Ricky Alvarez opened the scoring for Inter inside the opening half-hour, but Arturo Vidal equalized from the spot after Juan Jesus bundled over Mirko Vucinic to prompt the protracted spot kick exchange to decide the match.

Juventus established control over the proceedings in the early stages without consolidating its advantage. Vucinic headed over the bar inside the first 10 minutes after Andrea Pirlo presented him with a gilt-edged chance from a inviting free kick from the right. Pirlo then curled another set piece wide of the near post in a bid to turn its initiative into a goal.

The opener eventually arrived, but Inter snagged it decidedly against the run of play. Palacio drifted free down the left and then pulled back for Fredy Guarin to lash toward goal from distance. Gianluigi Buffon parried away the stinging effort, but the rebound sat up nicely in front of goal. Alvarez reacted before his markers and slotted home to stake Inter to the lead.

Previous service resumed after that point as Juventus attempted to produce an equalizer. Samir Handanovic rushed off his line to force Stefan Lichtsteiner's shot away from danger after good work by Carlos Tevez played him through.

The pressure eventually told two minutes before halftime as Vucinic won a debatable penalty. The Montenegrin striker tumbled easily under the challenge of Juan Jesus and watched referee Hilario Grajeda point to the spot to provide Vidal with a chance to equalize. Vidal made no mistake with his emphatic attempt to send the sides into the interval on level terms.

Both sides struggled to find their rhythm in the second half as the inevitable wave of substitutions introduced fresh options into the mix. Juventus remained on top for much of the stanza without finding a way through to produce up the winner.

Pirlo once again provided the primary threat from a set piece inside the final quarter of an hour. He conjured up another delightful piece of skill from a free kick and curled his effort onto the near post. The effort deflected out of danger to pave the way for penalties.

Both goalkeepers produced fine saves in the first round to pave the way for eight consecutive rounds of conversions. Carrizo then decided the affair with a stunning dive to his right to keep out Isla's effort and then polished off his night with a rasping drive to hand Inter seventh place.
