World 2018 2740 Top football/soccer transfer rumors: Oct. 28 - Nov. 3 31947838 Paying tribute Paying+tribute World

There are a few familiar faces in this week’s edition of Rumor Mill and some interesting angles on the futures of two players in particular – Robert Lewandowski and Wayne Rooney. The contracts of both men are running down (Rooney has an extra year) which makes their situations more than a little bit interesting. There is only one man we could use to help us pepper this week’s gossip -- Lou Reed, who died on Sunday at the age of 71. Reed was a founding member of experimental American rock band Velvet Underground, formed in New York in the 1960s. Reed went on to forge a successful solo career and we have 10 songs from both periods in this week’s Rumor Mill.

World 2018 2740 Top football/soccer transfer rumors: Oct. 28 - Nov. 3 31947833 Robert Lewandowski, Borussia Dortmund Robert+Lewandowski%2C+Borussia+Dortmund World

Rumor: Borussia Dortmund to Premier League.

Likelihood: Lewandowski will sit tight.

It seems that Dortmund will do anything to prevent Lewandowski from joining Bayern Munich. The Poland striker is widely expected to join the European champions when his contract expires in summer, but one of the Sunday morning papers revealed Dortmund are reportedly to offer their star player to Premier League clubs for a cut-price $11.3 million to keep him out of their rivals’ clutches. Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal are all in the frame apparently but we still expect him to join Pep Guardiola’s men.

World 2018 2740 Top football/soccer transfer rumors: Oct. 28 - Nov. 3 31947832 Wayne Rooney, Manchester United Wayne+Rooney%2C+Manchester+United World

Rumor: Manchester United to Chelsea.

Likelihood: Interesting.

The Wayne Rooney story is one that simply won’t disappear and for one good reason. The contract of the shooting star runs out at the end of next season so if United do not offer Rooney a new deal or the player decides not to accept then a decision has to be made. Sell him while his contract still has some way to go to get the possible price or simply allow him to run down his deal in 2015. Chelsea are thought to be ready to test United’s resolve, despite the purchase of Samuel Eto’o and Willian, with a $56.5 million offer in January. Rooney is enjoying playing once more so it will be interesting to see how this one transpires.

World 2018 2740 Top football/soccer transfer rumors: Oct. 28 - Nov. 3 31947828 Leighton Baines, Everton Leighton+Baines%2C+Everton World

Rumor: Everton to Manchester United.

Likelihood: January move looks likely.

During the summer many of us were wondering why David Moyes was chasing a left back when he already had a decent one in the shape of Patrice Evra and other areas of the field seemed much more of a priority. However, French defender Evra has since hinted that he could return to his homeland for "personal reasons" when his contract runs out at the end of the season. That’s something that was probably known to Moyes when he took the job and hence his pursuit of the Toffees left back.

Sure, this one could run, run, run but let’s not forget Everton are not planning to hold contract talks with Baines anytime soon which suggests they have finally relented. Swansea’s Ben Davies and Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand have emerged as potential replacements.

World 2018 2740 Top football/soccer transfer rumors: Oct. 28 - Nov. 3 31947831 Jack Wilshere, Arsenal Jack+Wilshere%2C+Arsenal World

Rumor: Arsenal to Barcelona.

Likelihood: We think he'll stay.

Waves of fear are running through the veins of Gunners fans again with the news Barcelona have sent their scouts to keep tabs on midfielder Jack Wilshere. His wonder goal against Norwich, a classic tiki-taka goal in the style of Barca, will have made the Spanish champions even more determined to land the England star, who is seen as a potential replacement for Xavi and Andres Iniesta. Arsenal do not want another Cesc Fabregas situation on their hands but Wilshere is a different animal altogether. Wilshere may only be getting bench roles at the moment but he represents the future of the club and is surely one of Arsenal’s non-negotiables.

World 2018 2740 Top football/soccer transfer rumors: Oct. 28 - Nov. 3 31947830 Andrea Pirlo, Juventus Andrea+Pirlo%2C+Juventus World

Rumor: Juventus to Tottenham.

Likelihood: Could happen in the summer.

Spurs were ready to offer the Italian midfielder a three-year deal in midweek, although one national UK newspaper reckons the deal is already on Pirlo’s table. The length of the contract may seem excessive for a man of 34 but Villas-Boas is determined to land his man in a bid to secure Champions League football. Sure, it would be a perfect day for Spurs fans should the great man end his career at White Hart Lane, but let’s not forget Juve could still make an offer of their own and there are bound to be other offers -- although whether another club is prepared to offer a three-year deal remains to be seen.

World 2018 2740 Top football/soccer transfer rumors: Oct. 28 - Nov. 3 31947829 Stephan El Shaarawy, AC Milan Stephan+El+Shaarawy%2C+AC+Milan World

Rumor: AC to the Premier League.

Likelihood: Say what?

El Shaarawy’s legendary hair cut suggests a man who likes to take a walk on the wild side but would he consider a move to the Premier League. Several papers have said Liverpool have joined Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham in the race to sign the Italy international, who is said to be unhappy with Mario Balotelli being the sumber one at the San Siro. We don’t where that has come form -- in fact we’ve only ever heard El Shaarawy say good things about Milan. Liverpool are the latest club to be linked with the striker, but would he get past Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge in their present form? El Shaarawy isn't playing at the moment because he’s injured so as far as we’re concerned it’s a non-story.

World 2018 2740 Top football/soccer transfer rumors: Oct. 28 - Nov. 3 31947834 Lukas Podolski, Arsenal Lukas+Podolski%2C+Arsenal World

Rumor: Arsenal to Atletico or Dortmund.

Likellhood: Surely not.

Podolski remains injured but that hasn’t stopped the rumor mongers from suggesting the German could be on his way to another club. Podolski has been played out of position on the left hand side since his move from Cologne a year ago although he has still scored 13 goals from 35 appearances. Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund have both been linked with the German forward and although we don’t know what goes on behind the scenes at the Emirates, Arsenal would be mad to sell such a major talent.

World 2018 2740 Top football/soccer transfer rumors: Oct. 28 - Nov. 3 31947835 Juan Mata, Chelsea Juan+Mata%2C+Chelsea World

Rumor: Chelsea to Paris Saint-Germain.

Likelihood: We'll see.

We know Mourinho said some nice things about Mata after the win against Steau Bucuresti, but the fact remains the Spaniard wasn’t deemed good enough to play in one of the biggest games of the season -- Sunday’s 2-1 win against Manchester City. Snubs like that have not gone unnoticed by PSG, who are planning to renew their interest in the 25-year-old midfielder in January. Mata will not want to be hangin’ ‘round on the bench forever, especially with the World Cup on the horizon, so we’ll see what Mourinho thinks in the New Year.

World 2018 2740 Top football/soccer transfer rumors: Oct. 28 - Nov. 3 31947836 Ramires, Chelsea Ramires%2C+Chelsea World

Rumor: Chelsea to Real Madrid.

Likelihood: None.

Ramires has the gift for running around a pitch for 90 minutes without pausing for breath and his performances go some way to explain Chelsea’s impressive start to the season. Despite being linked with a move to Real Madrid, the Brazilian midfielder is happy with life at Stamford Bridge. He said: "I am under contract until 2017 and I don't want to leave while there isn't anything happening and I am happy in the team. I will only leave if the club want me to. I feel have adapted well." We do too. He's going nowhere.

World 2018 2740 Top football/soccer transfer rumors: Oct. 28 - Nov. 3 31947837 Luke Shaw, Southampton Luke+Shaw%2C+Southampton World

Rumor: Southampton to Manchester United.

Likelihood: He's going to Chelsea.

David Moyes has been chasing a left back since the summer but will Southampton youngster Shaw have the good taste to make a move to Old Trafford as the long-term replacement for Patrice Evra. The simple answer is no. Yoo may not have heard of Shaw, 18, but he is an emerging talent and crucially a Chelsea fan. We’re not sure when this deal will happen but, when it does, expect to see Shaw in a blue rather than a red shirt.
