World 2018 2340 Top ten rumors - June 10-16 31799645 Special One Special+One World

The Special One is back at Chelsea and of course the Blues feature in this week’s Rumor Redux. Interestingly from Monday’s press conference, Mourinho hinted that he intends to reinstall John Terry as a key part of the squad and revealed he only expects to make only a couple of new signings despite being linked with dozens of players over the last couple of weeks. A fortnight ago the world said goodbye to another special one – The Doors’ keyboard player Ray Manzarek died from cancer at the age of 74. We know we’re late with this tribute, but the world is a poorer place without this ray of light. Ten tracks by seminal LA band The Doors are in this week’s mix.

LIKELIHOOD: As good a chance as any

The Uruguay striker has been talking about how much he would relish playing under Jose Mourinho given the opportunity, so what are the chances he will be runnin’ blue next season? What the headline-makers omit, and we are guilty of this too, is that he would also love to be coached by Manuel Pellegrini too! However, The important quotes of the week came from Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, who expects to hold talks with the Blues. Some papers are saying that a big bid has been lodged so it looks like Chelsea are ahead of Manchester City and PSG.

World 2018 2340 Top ten rumors - June 10-16 31798713 Cesc Fabregas Cesc+Fabregas World

LIKELIHOOD: Ahead of Arsenal, but lots of work to do

The UK press are getting excited about a battle between United and Arsenal over the services of Barca midfielder Fabregas, who supposedly met Tito Vilanova last week to discuss his future. Arsenal apparently have first option of re-signing Fabregas should the Spain international decide to leave Camp Nou but that won’t stop United moving “heaven and earth” to sign him, as former United defender Denis Irwin claimed last week. The fact is that Fabregas wants to stay, but wants assurances about his future role. Having been down so long when trying to force his move from Arsenal over a two-year period, Fabregas won’t throw it all away now.

World 2018 2340 Top ten rumors - June 10-16 31798712 Gonzalo Higuain Gonzalo+Higuain World

LIKELIHOOD: Seems too good to be true

What’s this? A high-quality, established player being linked with a move to Arsenal? Surely not! Whether the Gunners can actually break on through and land someone with the credentials of Higuain was given credence last week by chief executive Ivan Gazidis, who said the club could afford to sign someone of the caliber of Wayne Rooney. But there’s always a "but" when it comes to Arsenal transfer stories and that comes in the shape of Juventus, who are keen to get things moving. However, they have been told no decision will be made until the club have appointed a new coach. Sorry, Arsene, our money is on Juve.

World 2018 2340 Top ten rumors - June 10-16 31798715 Luka Modric Luka+Modric World

LIKELIHOOD: Don’t think so

No doubt Mourinho has told Modric ‘we could be so good together’ at Chelsea, but it seems the Portuguese’s charm offensive is falling on deaf ears. Modric, a big fan of Mourinho, admits there has been interest from other clubs, although he won’t say which ones, but the former Tottenham midfielder has revealed he is happy at the Bernabeu and wants to stay. Sorry Jose!

World 2018 2340 Top ten rumors - June 10-16 31798714 Robert Lewandowski Robert+Lewandowski World

LIKELIHOOD: Get ready for fireworks

We expect this one to get nasty. Dortmund’s chief executive officer Hans-Joachim Watzke has said the Pole will not be joining arch rivals Bayern Munich because they never made a formal offer. That contradicts Lewandowski’s statement from last week when he said he expected to join the club of his choice soon. Dortmund are the riders on the storm that shows no sign of letting up and say the case is closed, but we don’t think so. Sit back and watch the show.

LIKELIHOOD: Di Maria will be a key player for Real Madrid

Not content with landing Jesus Navas from Sevilla, new City boss Manuel Pellegrini has set his sights on Real Madrid winger Di Maria. City are certainly breakin’ a sweat in a bid to wrest the Premier League title back from United as the capture of Fernandinho proves, but what are the chances of Pellegrini signing the Argentine ? We think Di Maria will be a tough nut to crack as Carlo Ancelotti will want to keep his best players at the club once he is installed at the Bernabeu.

World 2018 2340 Top ten rumors - June 10-16 31798718 Leandro Damiao Leandro+Damiao World

LIKELIHOOD: We still don’t buy it

We thought we’d put this one to bed after 18 months of hard chasin’ from Spurs, but Villas-Boas won’t give up without a fight. Tottenham’s proposed deal for the Brazilian collapsed on deadline day in January and many thought that was the end of the matter, but that’s apparently not the case. The agent of the Internacional striker has said a move to Spurs “can’t be ruled out.” The only setback is that Damiao would prefer to play for a club in the Champions League – and that could be a sticking point. If we had to nail out colors to the mast we reckon Damiao will still be at Internacional next season.

World 2018 2340 Top ten rumors - June 10-16 31798721 Carlos Tevez Carlos+Tevez World

LIKELIHOOD: Highly unlikely

People are strange and few have done odder things than Suarez over the last couple of years (OK, Tevez and Joey Barton have good cases too). Liverpool’s very own vampire wants to leave the Reds because of the way he has been treated by the press (just don’t bite the opposition Luis and we’ll leave you alone!) which has inevitably led to questions about his replacement should he go. Tevez would naturally be out of the Reds’ reach if Suarez stayed, but in any case there are a heap of clubs ahead of Liverpool – and Juventus tops the lot.

World 2018 2340 Top ten rumors - June 10-16 31803723 David Alaba David+Alaba World

We don’t know where this rumor came from, but the chances of it happening are at least five to one and probably higher (yeah, we know). Alaba is reportedly unhappy playing at left-back which is why Arsene Wenger is prepared to offer the Austrian his preferred central midfield role. Alaba must surely have developed a taste for success after he helped Bayern land an historic treble and if he takes just a cursory glance at Arsenal’s silverware cupboard from the last eight years he would notice it looked quite empty.

World 2018 2340 Top ten rumors - June 10-16 31798719 Marouane Fllaini Marouane+Fllaini World

LIKELIHOOD: Hard to say

Strange days indeed at Goodison Park, who are having to get used to a new manager in addition to doubts surrounding the futures of both Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini. New Toffees boss Roberto Martinez says Fellaini is not going anywhere although should a club activate his £24 million ($37 million) get-out clause the Toffees will have no choice but to sell. At the moment Arsenal seem to have a slight edge over Manchester United, but there’s a distinct possibility another season at Goodison Park beckons.
