World 2018 43 World Club Power Rankings: March 7-13 31621532 Leaps and bounds Leaps+and+bounds World

This week’s Power Rankings underwent massive changes largely due to one man: Cristiano Ronaldo (or Referee Cuneyt Cakir, depending on who you ask). After leading Real to a second straight Clasico win over Barcelona, Ronaldo’s winner at Old Trafford sent Manchester United out of the Champions League and out of our top 5, catapulting Madrid up our rankings. Last week: 1

Fact File

League Record: 20-3-1, first place, Bundesliga (Germany)

Domestic Cup: Defeated Borussia Dortmund 1-0 at Allianz Arena

Europe: Round of 16 Champions League second-leg match versus Arsenal at Alianz Arena on Mar. 13

Last five matches: 5-0-0

Summary:

Bayern avoided slipping up at lowly Hoffenheim over the weekend despite resting some of its key stars. The team might want to get used to it. With nobody near Bayern in the Bundesliga standings, Jupp Heynckes can rest his key men as he sees fit, especially ahead of the return leg against Arsenal.

Summary:

Back-to-back wins over Barcelona, followed by a grinding road win at Old Trafford to move into the Champions League quarters? Not a bad week is it? Yes, Real Madrid may have gotten a favorable call here or there, but there’s no denying that Madrid are now the hottest team on the planet.

Summary:

Juventus move up to the No. 3 spot in part thanks to mistakes from the competition, but more so due to yet another stellar defensive display in the Champions League. By beating Celtic 2-0 Wednesday, Juve have now held Champions League opposition scoreless for five straight games. Gigi Buffon is again staking a claim as the world’s best goalkeeper.

Last five league matches: 3-1-1

Summary:

Looks like Dortmund just needed the Champions League to find their form again. After some sub-par performances in the Bundesliga recently, a lot of pressure was put on Jurgen Klopp’s team ahead of the second leg with Shakhtar. His players delivered with a dominating performance that underlined its title aspirations and put Europe back on notice. BVB is for real.

Europe: Round of 16 Champions League match versus AC Milan on Mar. 12 at Camp Nou

Last five matches: 2-0-3

Summary:

Barca, for the first time in ages, has some real questions to answer. You could have forgiven Barca for its back-to-back away losses at Milan and Real Madrid, but after what transpired at the Camp Nou last weekend, you’d think Real is the side dominating La Liga. The Catalans’ league lead remains safe, for now, but Barca must find its old dominance quickly to survive in Europe. It will be highly interesting to see how Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez, and Andres Iniesta respond in the face of real crisis.

Domestic Cup: Defeated Olympique Marseille 2-0 in Coupe de France

Europe: Advance to Champions League quarterfinals with 3-2 aggregate win over Valencia

Last five matches: 2-2-1

Summary:

PSG did not impress against Valencia throughout their second leg at the Parc de Princes, and it was obvious how much they missed the suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic. That’s a bad omen for the Parisians, as Zlatan will also miss the first quarterfinal leg against a presumably much more difficult opponent.

Last five matches: 3-1-1

Summary:

Perhaps United doesn’t deserve to drop all the way down to this spot, but the fact remains, they will not be standing amongst Europe’s final eight. Now, the Red Devils must quickly shift their focus to Sunday. If they lose to Chelsea in the FA Cup quarterfinal, they, like Barcelona, suddenly could find themselves with only one trophy when a Treble seemed a real possibility not too long ago.

Europe: Holds 2-0 first leg lead over Barcelona in UEFA Champions League round of 16. Second leg at Camp Nou on Mar. 12

Last five matches: 3-2-0

Summary:

Back when Milan played Lazio in October, it lost 3-2 and plummeted down to 15th place in Serie A. This past weekend, Milan won the reverse fixture 3-0, elevating them to third place. It’s been an incredible turnaround, and all eyes will be set on the Rossoneri this coming Tuesday as they bring a two-goal advantage into their second leg against Barcelona. Win there, and Milan will quickly draw comparisons to last year’s Champions League dark horse winners Chelsea.

Summary:

Porto stays in the No. 9 spot after a scoreless draw against Sporting. Still looking for some respect amongst our voters, Porto could do a lot towards improving its spot by getting past Malaga and moving into the Champions League quarterfinals next week.

Summary:

Atletico had a great chance to shrink Barcelona’s La Liga lead to nine points over the weekend, but instead were held to a scoreless draw by Malaga. Still, Atletico has an outside chance if Barca continues to struggle, and after beating Sevilla in the Copa del Rey semifinals, has a chance to put the ultimate hurt on La Liga’s duopoly: beat rival Real Madrid in Barcelona’s Camp Nou for a trophy.
