Chelsea protected its perch atop the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Everton at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Howard performed his usual heroics to repel Chelsea's efforts for most of the day, but he could not deal with Frank Lampard's late free kick and watched the Blues celebrate when it somehow ended up in the back of the net. Everton now sits six points behind city rivals Liverpool in the race for fourth place after suffering a second consecutive defeat.
