The combative midfielder settled for a place on the bench for the 2-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen after starting in the second leg Champions League playoff tie at PAOK in midweek. Jones climbed off the bench for the final 12 minutes to help Schalke see out the match. His duties will shift with the United States, though: he is expected to resume his usual central midfield partnership with Michael Bradley for the visit to Costa Rica on Friday night.

USA 2737 43 Americans Abroad: Aug. 30 - Sept. 1 31896421 Fabian Johnson, Hoffenheim midfielder Fabian+Johnson%2C+Hoffenheim+midfielder USA

Johnson will rendezvous with his international teammates in the wake of a humbling 6-2 defeat to VfB Stuttgart on Sunday. The likely starter on the left flank played the entire affair at left back, as Hoffenheim slumped to a heavy derby defeat. Johnson will strive to avoid a similar fate and take his usual place in the U.S. starting XI in Costa Rica on Friday.

USA 2737 43 Americans Abroad: Aug. 30 - Sept. 1 31893659 Tim Howard, Everton goalkeeper Tim+Howard%2C+Everton+goalkeeper USA

Everton continued its frustrating start to the campaign with a third straight draw, but Howard can at least take some solace in his own personal success to open the season. The veteran number one registered his second clean sheet in succession in Everton's 0-0 draw at Cardiff City on Saturday. Howard will hope for similar defensive results – and perhaps a goal or two – over the next two matches with his country.

USA 2737 43 Americans Abroad: Aug. 30 - Sept. 1 31893658 Geoff Cameron, Stoke City defender Geoff+Cameron%2C+Stoke+City+defender USA

Cameron could find himself in contention for a starting berth in San Jose after Seattle midfielder Brad Evans picked up a calf injury in the Sounders' 1-0 victory at Columbus on Saturday. The former Houston star started again at right back for the Potters in the 1-0 triumph at West Ham United on Saturday. Cameron's early season form could place him at the head of the queue, with Evans subsequently ruling himself out of the trip to Costa Rica on Twitter on Sunday.

Roma manager Rudi Garcia left Bradley on the bench at the start of the 3-0 home victory over Hellas Verona on Sunday. The energetic midfielder replaced Miralem Pjanic for the final 18 minutes, as the Romans secured the points with minimal resistance from the visitors. Bradley faces increased competition for places in central midfield after Roma's summer transfer work, but he will shift his focus to his international commitments ahead of the pair of matches against Costa Rica and Mexico.

A wonderful first-time volley from Matias Alustiza gave Puebla all three points with a 1-0 victory over Atlante on Sunday. Beasley assumed his usual duties on the left flank and played for the entire encounter. Puebla's second victory of the Apertura campaign offered Beasley a timely boost, as he prepared to assume his usual left back role with the United States ahead of the qualifiers against Costa Rica and Mexico.

USA 2737 43 Americans Abroad: Aug. 30 - Sept. 1 31894503 Jozy Altidore, Sunderland forward Jozy+Altidore%2C+Sunderland+forward USA

The availability of the in-form forward remains in some doubt after he missed Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Crystal Palace with a hamstring injury. Altidore will join the U.S. squad in Miami to receive further evaluation on the knock, according to a U.S. Soccer spokesperson. U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann will hope Altidore recovers from the knock in time to lead the line in San Jose on Friday night.

United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann paid careful attention to developments in Europe and in Mexico over the weekend as he waited for his players to arrive in Miami. Klinsmann relies on foreign-based players to comprise the majority of his starting XI. Any sort of lingering complaint – including one particularly notable hamstring knock in Wearside – could alter his plans for the upcoming pair of World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica (Sept. 6 in San Jose) and Mexico (Sept. 10 in Columbus, Ohio).

The first edition of Americans Abroad for the new season runs the rule over several potential starters, and their status heading into this busy 10-day international period.
