USA 2737 8 USWNT 3-0 Colombia: Player Ratings 31228334 Hands off! Hands+off%21 USA

The USWNT continued their excellent start in the group stage of the Olympics with a 3-0 win over Colombia. They faced a very scrappy team, who threw everything at them—even punches—but they prevailed. The stars shone brightly again, and the US women showed that they are the team to beat this summer in London.

How did the players perform? Read on to find out.

USA 2737 8 USWNT 3-0 Colombia: Player Ratings 31228329 Hope Solo, GK Hope+Solo%2C+GK USA

The veteran goalkeeper didn’t have much to do today. Colombia’s attack was far weaker than France, and they only had a chance or two that ever looked slightly threatening. Solo did her job when called upon, but there wasn’t much for her to deal with. But that’s a good thing for the USWNT.

USA 2737 8 USWNT 3-0 Colombia: Player Ratings 31229216 Heather Mitts, D Heather+Mitts%2C+D USA

Mitts got the start over Amy Le Peilbet, who struggled against France on Wednesday. She didn’t have much to do on Saturday against Colombia, as they didn’t put together a very strong attack. She pressed forward a little bit in the attack, but often stayed home in defense. It will be interesting to see if she ends up the permanent starter over Le Peilbet.

USA 2737 8 USWNT 3-0 Colombia: Player Ratings 31229214 Christie Rampone, D Christie+Rampone%2C+D USA

The captain had a stronger game than on Wednesday, able to contain the minimal Colombia attack. She still doesn’t get much help from her central defense partner Buehler, but did the best she could in the situation. The backline looked better overall, and part of it in thanks to Rampone’s leadership and experience.

USA 2737 8 USWNT 3-0 Colombia: Player Ratings 31229212 Rachel Buehler, D Rachel+Buehler%2C+D USA

Had another rough outing, but luckily for her and the team, it was against a much weaker side than they faced on Wednesday. Colombia rarely tested the US backline, but Buehler still managed to make some poor decisions on the ball when she had to. None of her mistakes were detrimental, but she was again unimpressive.

USA 2737 8 USWNT 3-0 Colombia: Player Ratings 31229215 Kelly O'Hara, D Kelly+O%27Hara%2C+D USA

The outside back had a much improved game compared with Wednesday. She held her own on defense, didn’t make any glaring errors and even pushed forward well, combining with Rapinoe a few times. She tends to be hot and cold in her play, but Saturday against Colombia, she was leaning to the warmer end of the scale.

USA 2737 8 USWNT 3-0 Colombia: Player Ratings 31229213 Megan Rapinoe, M Megan+Rapinoe%2C+M USA

Rapinoe was stellar yet again. She keeps finding ways to shine, even when on the field with super stars Alex Morgan and Abby Wambach. She was the playmaker again on Saturday for the US. She opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, scoring on an excellent finish that looped over the keeper and then slid under the bar. Morgan got the assist. As she was on Wednesday, Rapinoe was the player of the match.

USA 2737 8 USWNT 3-0 Colombia: Player Ratings 31229217 Lauren Cheney, M Lauren+Cheney%2C+M USA

Cheney had another solid game. She linked up well with Rapinoe, but played a little more of a reserved role, dropping behind the attack. Rapinoe was pulling the strings offensively, and Cheney helped keep control in the midfield.

With Shannon Boxx out injured, and no time table on her return, Lloyd will be filling in for her in the immediate future. And how she has stepped up. She added to her Olympics goal total with another on Saturday, sealing the deal late for the US. She scored the third goal of the day, assisted by none other than Megan Rapinoe. Lloyd is absolutely making sure Boxx’s absence isn’t felt heavily.

USA 2737 8 USWNT 3-0 Colombia: Player Ratings 31228331 Heather O'Reilly Heather+O%27Reilly USA

O’Reilly got the start over Tobin Heath. She didn’t have much of a memorable game. She was a bit absent on the wing, and that is probably why Heath was brought on for her in the 67th minute. She didn’t do anything wrong, but she didn’t quite add to the game either.

USA 2737 8 USWNT 3-0 Colombia: Player Ratings 31228332 Alex Morgan, F Alex+Morgan%2C+F USA

Morgan put in another excellent game on Saturday. While the rising star didn’t score, she showed off some of her footwork to assist on Rapinoe’s goal. She intercepted a pass, used her skills on the ball to create space on the top of the box, and slotted a perfect ball to Rapinoe. She was a nuisance to the Colombian defense all night, helping to wear them down and pave the way for her teammates to score.

Despite being flat-out hit in the face—which went uncalled by the referee but was clear on replays—Wambach had a fantastic game. She was always dangerous in the box, giving the Colombian defense a hard time. Scored a strong goal, slicing through two defenders to give the US a 2-0 lead. It was her 140th career goal.

Heath came in for the final 23 minutes, and didn’t take long to make an impact. She assisted on Abby Wambach’s goal to help give the US a 2-0 lead. She provided the offensive spark the US needed to grab a couple of insurance goals late in the game. Solid outing from the youngster.
