Poor performance leads to ban

The Bulgarian football union has banned a referee for an unspecified period of time following his poor performance in a topflight match.
The union said on Monday that its referees' commission has taken Nikolay Yordanov off its list because of his unsatisfactory performance during the league match between Levski Sofia and Litex Lovech on April 20. The ruling follows criticism by Litex coach Hristo Stoitchkov, the Bulgarian great who described the referee's performance as ''a shame for football'' as he made ''errors that influenced the outcome.'' Levski won 2-1.
The match in Lovech was also marred by Levski fans displaying banners bearing swastikas and symbols in honor of Adolf Hitler's birthday. The football union is yet to react to the incident.
