Transfer deadline day running
It's transfer deadline day in Europe as clubs look to make last-minute additions to their squads for the new season. Here you'll find the latest permanent and loan signings as they are completed across the continent.
Update at 2210: The transfer window has now officially closed, but clubs are still announcing the last minute arrivals, or in the case of Chelsea, departures, of players. The European champion says on its website that Ghana international midfielder Michael Essien has joined Spanish league champion Real Madrid on a season-long loan.
The 29-year-old Essien was signed by Jose Mourinho when he was Chelsea manager in 2005 and Mourinho has now signed him again at Madrid.
2155: Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton has joined French club Marseille on a season-long loan deal. The 29-year-old Barton had been serving a 12-match ban for elbowing Carlos Tevez, kicking Sergio Aguero and trying to head-butt Vincent Kompany. Cameroon international Stephane Mbia has signed for the London club in Barton's place in a permanent transfer from Marseille.
''It was an easy decision because this is an important move for my career. It has always been a dream of mine to play in the Premier League, which I believe is the best league in the world,'' Mbia said.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa has confirmed on its official Twitter page that Belgium international striker Christian Benteke has completed his transfer from Genk. The 21-year-old Benteke has signed a four-year deal.
2115: French club Lyon says on its website that goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has signed for Premier League club Tottenham on a four-year deal for an initial 10 million euros ($12.6 million), a fee that could rise to 15 million euros ($18.7 million).
2100: Manchester City has completed the signing of central defender Matija Nastasic from Italian side Fiorentina for an undisclosed fee. Stefan Savic has been exchanged with Nastasic as a part of the deal.
The Serbia international defender Nastasic is the fourth signing of the day by City manager Roberto Mancini, joining Scott Sinclar, Richard Wright and Maicon.
2050: West Brom has completed the signing of Macedonia international left-back Goran Popov from Dynamo Kiev on a season-long loan deal.
Aston Villa has also made an addition to its squad with the arrival of 22-year-old midfielder Ashley Westwood on a four-year deal from English third tier team Crewe.
1920: Everton has announced on Twitter that it has completed the signing of Costa Rican defender Bryan Oviedo from FC Copenhagen on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
1840: Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz has joined Spanish La Liga team Malaga on a season-long loan deal. The Paraguayan striker has also played for Bayern Munich, Real Betis and Blackburn.
Elsewhere in the Premier League, Queens Park Rangers striker Jay Bothroyd has been sent on loan to English second tier side Sheffield Wednesday until January 2nd.
In the Netherlands, former Liverpool player Ryan Babel has rejoined Ajax after being released from German club Hoffenheim.
1815: The transfer window has been quiet in the past hour but Southampton, newly-promoted to the Premier League, has just announced the completion of the signing of midfielder Gaston Ramirez from Bologna.
The 21-year-old Ramirez has agreed a four-year contract and his new manager Nigel Adkins expressed his excitement at the arrival of the Uruguay international.
''What we have got is one of the most exciting prospects in world football coming to St Mary's,'' he said. ''There is a lot of ambition at the Football Club and we are all delighted that Gaston is going to come and join us.''
The transfer of Ramirez has not gone through in time for him to make his debut against Manchester United on Sunday.
Elsewhere, Chelsea has loaned attacking midfielder Gael Kakuta to Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem on a season-long deal.
There is now only four hours remaining for Premier League clubs to complete its business until the transfer window reopens in January.
1645: Italian team Juventus has confirmed the signing of Arsenal's Denmark international striker Nicklas Bendtner on a season-long loan deal.
''I can finally say I am a Juventus player,'' Bendtner wrote on his Twitter page. ''Very proud and can't wait to wear the stripes! I hope we will have great times together.''
1610: Swansea City has completed the signing of Valencia winger Pablo Hernandez for 5.5 million pounds ($8.7 million) which is a club record fee.
''I'm very happy to become a Swansea player. I want to thank the club and (Swansea manager) Michael Laudrup for making me feel like a very important player. Now I want to repay the faith on the football field,'' Hernandez said.
1550: Southampton manager Nigel Adkins is hopeful Uruguay international midfielder Gaston Ramirez will soon join the club from Bologna.
''We are very optimistic and very hopeful. A lot of work has gone into this deal and all being well, he will become our player. I believe we are very, very close.''
1530: Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas has been speaking about the possibility of goalkeeper Hugo Lloris leaving the club to join Tottenham and the difficulties he has experienced in speaking to officials at the north London club.
''Hugo Lloris is on a plane to go to Tottenham even if the deal isn't finalized. We're dealing with executives who are very pernickety, even questionable, during negotiations because they alternate on promises that were made during the night. What's true at 5 in the morning no longer is at 10 o'clock.
''For me it's very important that Hugo finds himself in a club of quality but also a club that, in its values and commitments, allows him to feel comfortable. There's a 50-50 chance that Lloris will go to Tottenham.''
1502: Manchester City has completed the signing of Inter Milan's Brazil defender Maicon for an undisclosed fee. The 31-year-old Maicon has 66 caps for his country and made 235 appearances for Inter, scoring 20.
1437: Berbatov has spoken to Fulham's official website about his delight at joining the club. The 31-year-old forward said: ''As soon as I was aware of Fulham's interest my decision to join was an easy one to make. I'm delighted ... and I look forward to playing under Martin Jol again.''
Berbatov scored 56 goals in 149 games at Old Trafford.
1425: Fulham has confirmed the signing of Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United on a two-year deal. The striker has joined for an undisclosed fee.
1410: Yet another midfielder has left White Hart Lane and Tottenham. This time it is Netherlands international Rafael van der Vaart, returning to his former club Hamburg on a three-year contract. Three midfielders have left Tottenham so far today, surely manager Andre Villas-Boas has a replacement lined up?
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been speaking to the club's website about his target in the remaining hours of the transfer window. ''There are a number of players we're enquiring about. There is no doubt we need to add goals to the team. That was always an objective when I first came in,'' Rodgers said. ''''There'll be hopefully one or two coming in.''
1353: Mexico international Giovani dos Santos has followed Danny Rose in leaving Tottenham, although this time it is on a permanent deal. Tottenham says the club agreed a deal with Spanish club Real Mallorca for the transfer of the attacking midfielder.
1325: Arsenal striker Ju Young Park has signed for Celta Viga on a season-long loan. The South Korea international has made only six appearances for Arsene Wenger's team since joining in 2011 from Monaco. Meanwhile, Arsenal's north London rival Tottenham has announced on its website that England Under-21 midfielder Danny Rose has joined fellow Premier League team Sunderland, also on a season-long loan.
1315: After sending Andy Carroll on loan to West Ham on Thursday night, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has continued the reshaping of his squad by selling midfielder Charlie Adam to Stoke. Rodgers' big signings this summer have been Fabio Borini, Joe Allen and Nuri Sahin but he is expected to bolster his squad even further today.
The leading clubs in England, Spain and Italy have already been busy on this most frantic of days, with Manchester City signing winger Scott Sinclair from Swansea and selling Netherlands midfielder Nigel de Jong to AC Milan. Juventus is also close to sealing a loan deal for Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner and Dutch winger Ibrahim Afellay has been loaned by Barcelona to Schalke. And this is only the start.
