Spanish league announces calendar for new season

Defending champion Barcelona will host Levante and Real Madrid is at home to Real Betis in the opening round of the Spanish league season.

The Spanish league announced its calendar on Tuesday. The season begins Aug. 17 and the first ''clasico'' clash between Madrid and Barcelona, which could field Lionel Messi and Neymar in attack, will take place on Oct. 27 at the Camp Nou. The return match at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium is on March 23.

Other opening matches are Valencia vs. Malaga, Sevilla vs. Atletico Madrid, Valladolid vs. Athletic Bilboa, Real Sociedad vs. Getafe, Osasuna vs. Granada, Celta Vigo vs. Espanyol, Rayo Vallecano vs. Elche and Almeria vs. Villarreal.

Bilbao will play its first game at its new San Mames stadium against Osasuna on the weekend beginning Aug. 24.
