Former Germany goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand will not a get a contract extension at Schalke and will leave the club at the end of the season.

The Bundesliga club says it has ''other plans'' for the goalkeeper position in the future. The 34-year-old Hildebrand lost his place in Schalke's starting 11 late last year to Ralf Faerhmann.

Hildebrand played seven games for Germany. He won the Bundesliga championship with Stuttgart in 2007, spent a season in Valencia and also played for Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga. He has been with Schalke since October 2011.

Kicker magazine says Schalke will sign Fortuna Duesseldorf's goalkeeper Fabian Giefer when his contract with the second-division club expires at the end of the season.
