HAMBURG, Germany (AP)

Hamburger SV attacking midfielder Maximilian Beister has been ruled out for the rest of the season after tearing the cruciate ligament in his left knee in a friendly game.

Hamburg says on its website that a scan Saturday confirmed the extent of Beister's injury. It was sustained when Beister sprinted for the ball during Friday's game against Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem in Abu Dhabi.

Hamburg sporting director Oliver Kreuzer says ''it's very bitter of course. I'm very sorry for Maxi in particular, because he played great games and scored important goals for us in the opening half to the season.''

The 23-year-old Beister will undergo an operation in the coming week.

Hamburg is 14th as the 18-team Bundesliga takes its winter break.
